Everyday Exercise: Everywhere!
When it comes to heart health, even a little physical activity is better than none at all. So, if a health club membership isn't in your budget or a daily aerobic workout won't fit into your schedule, you can benefit by simply increasing the exercise you get in your daily activities.* There are opportunities everywhere you look:
- Consider bicycling or walking to work or the train station, especially in good weather.
- Simple home improvement projects like painting or planting a window box offer moderate exercise, pride of accomplishment — and cost savings.
- Don't push that button — take the stairs (at least part way) rather than the elevator.
- Bring a heart healthy lunch with you to work and enjoy an impromptu picnic.
- Take short, brisk walks during break times.
- When the weather's bad, become a "mall walker."
- Walk your dog farther or more frequently.
- Revive the American tradition of taking a leisurely neighborhood stroll after dinner.
- Instead of worrying about getting the closest parking space, take the farthest and enjoy a stress-free jaunt to the store or your office.
- Use a pedometer to gauge how many steps you normally take in a day. Try to increase by 100 steps/day the first week and 200 steps/day the next week and so on, until you hit the recommended 10,000 steps/day.
