What's So Great About Cocoa and Chocolate?
There is nothing in the world like cocoa. It's true! In addition to the cultural connection we have with cocoa and chocolate, cocoa has a unique chemical makeup and properties that make it one-of-a-kind. So what is it about cocoa that makes it so special?
Cocoa and chocolate are made from cocoa seeds, more commonly referred to as cocoa beans. These cocoa seeds come from cocoa pods which are the fruit of the cocoa tree, Theobroma cacao. Like other plant-based foods, cocoa is rich in plant nutrients - particularly a class called "flavanols." Cocoa is a naturally rich source of the flavanols epicatchin, catechin and procyanadins. And although other foods such as tea and red wine contain flavanols, they don't have the same flavanol compounds in the same amounts. It's the activity of flavanols in the human body that has spurred so much interest in the role of cocoa and chocolate in a healthy diet.
In fact, results from numerous scientific research papers on cocoa flavanols show that they have a positive impact on circulatory health and related conditions. When we remember that nearly every body system is affected by blood circulation, it's easy to see why these results are so exciting. Heart health, brain health – even digestive health and exercise performance may be supported by healthy blood vessels and healthy blood flow. These study findings are preliminary in nature, but there is promising support that flavanol-rich foods, such as cocoa, may be important for overall health.
Here's a taste of detailed research findings to date on cocoa flavanols and your health.
